Built in the 11th century as a triple-aisled Romanesque basilica, the collegiate church was remodeled in Baroque style in the 18th century. In the course of time the precinct with the church, its adjacent cloister, the St Gallus chapel and more than 30 canon’s residences developed into an artistic and architectural complex of singular importance. The treasury ranks among Switzerland’s finest and most important and contains works of European significance, e. g. the 7th century Warnebertus reliquary, ivory panels from the 8th to 14th century, a High Gothic procession cross and evangeliarium, and Baroque chalices. It is supplemented by a rich collection of early and high medieval reliquary clothes and major holdings of precious paraments from the 17th to 19th century.
